Ode to the Heartstealer
A dog does not belong to us,
Though we may think it so.
For in their eyes, a tale unfolds
Of love, both deep and slow.
They steal our hearts with gentle paws,
Their gaze, a soft command,
And though we claim to own them,
It’s they who take our hand.
No leash can bind, no cage can hold
The spirit wild and free.
For in each wag, each playful bark,
They choose us, not we them, you see.
In moments quiet, in joy or fear,
They come, not for the prize,
But for the comfort, love, and warmth
That lives behind our eyes.
They ask for nothing but a touch,
A word, a simple cheer.
Yet in return, they give the world,
Their loyalty sincere.
No, we do not own a dog,
We are but lucky few,
For it is they who choose us,
And make our hearts anew.
